Your Complete Sandals Dress Code Guide: Resort Casual vs. Resort Evening and What to Wear
Planning a Sandals escape and wondering what to wear? The Travel Rooster is here with a suitcase-friendly guide that keeps things stylish, comfortable, and island-perfect. Sandals Resorts deliver luxury, romance, and relaxation, and knowing the dress code helps you pack smarter so you can focus on sunsets, swim-up bars, and maybe even dinner on the beach.
Daytime Attire at Sandals: Light, Casual, and Poolside Ready
Daytime at Sandals is relaxed, sunny, and barefoot-friendly. I like to spend mornings at the beach, afternoons by the pool, and stop by the grill for jerk chicken in between. Maybe hit the food trucks for a quick snack. Just remember, swimwear is for pool and beach areas only, so bring cover ups for walking to restaurants and lounges. Beach and pool tip: Bring your favorite drink cup and they will use it to fill your drinks!
Swimwear
Pack your favorite swim essentials. That includes swim trunks, bikinis, one pieces, and/or swim shirts or rash guards. Don’t forget the sunscreen! For getting to lunch, coffee, or the swim-up bar, pair your swimwear with a cover up, a sundress, or a linen shirt. Sandals provides towels at pools and beaches, so no need to pack those. I also bring a hat for the pool.

Casual Clothes
Choose breezy fabrics like cotton, linen, or lightweight blends. Pack T shirts, polos, tank tops (pool and beach areas), sundresses, shorts, and skirts. You can spend the day going between the beach and a smoothie bar and feel perfectly comfortable. If you’re trying watersports, beach games, or heading out on an excursion, bring casual outfits you don’t mind getting sandy or salty. Somehow, I always get wet no matter what I do!
If you want to try kayaking, paddleboarding, or snorkeling, most Sandals resorts include unlimited watersports with top-notch equipment, and you can even explore scuba diving options at Sandals Scuba if you are certified or interested in learning.
Footwear
Flip flops, slides, and casual sandals are perfect for daytime. Pack comfortable walking sandals or athletic shoes for excursions or tours. Shoes are required inside restaurants and indoor venues, but the beach remains barefoot territory. You can always wash off your feet at the shower station by the beach if you don’t like that sand feeling.
Evening Attire: Resort Casual vs. Resort Evening
Evenings at Sandals bring a hint of elegance. Dinner becomes an experience, lighting softens, live music starts, and outfits get just a little more refined. Sandals uses two categories for dinner attire: Resort Casual and Resort Evening. I like to adhere to their suggestions. It makes me feel better about myself.
Resort Casual
Resort Casual means neat and relaxed. Perfect for buffet dinners, beach grills, and most restaurants. Dress shorts are allowed. Here are Sandals suggestions:
- Dress shorts or cotton shorts
- Jeans
- Capris or lightweight slacks
- Polo shirts or button downs
- Casual sundresses
- Dressy sandals, loafers, or flats
Not permitted: swimwear and bare feet.
Resort Evening
Resort Evening is reserved for the elegant venues and specialty restaurants. Think of it as date night or celebration attire.
- Long pants for men only. Jeans are okay.
- Collared shirts or dress shirts
- Elegant tops, skirts, or dresses
- Dressy sandals, heels, or closed toe shoes
Not permitted: shorts, tee shirts, flip flops, athletic shoes, hats, tank tops, or beach shoes.
How to Tell the Difference
Resort Casual allows dress shorts and sandals. Resort Evening requires long pants for men and more polished footwear. If it feels like a romantic dinner or celebration, you are dressing Resort Evening. You can check the restaurant list at each resort and it will tell you the required attire for dining. Like it is here.

What Not to Pack
- Business suits and formal work clothing. (I almost packed a travel blazer on may last trip, but decided against it!)
- Heavy or bulky clothing you will never use
- Oversized jewelry or valuables
- Beach towels (Sandals provides them)
- Camouflage clothing, which is restricted in several Caribbean countries
Focus on comfort, style, and simplicity. Choose outfits you will actually wear. At Sandals, less is more and linen will be your new best friend.

Sandals Dress Code FAQ
Do I need to dress up every night?
No. Many restaurants are Resort Casual, so neat shorts and a polo or sundress are fine. You will need a few Resort Evening outfits for fancier restaurants.
Can I wear jeans to dinner?
Yes, if they are neat and paired with a dress shirt or nice top. Lightweight pants are usually more comfortable in the Caribbean weather.
Are sandals or flip flops allowed at dinner?
For Resort Casual, dressy sandals are fine. For Resort Evening, avoid casual flip flops and wear dressier shoes.
Can you help me with a personalized packing list?
Yes. I help clients pick the right resort, room, and packing plan based on their activities, dining plans, and style preference. Just ask.
