Jamaica – Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, South Coast

Which airport should I fly into, Montego Bay or Kingston International? Most of the time the direct flights for tourists go to Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport (MBJ), and most major airlines fly in and out of Montego Bay. Kingston,’s Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) is an option, depending on price and resort location. Ian Fleming Airport (OCJ) is small but newer, and can be an option since it’s about 9 miles from Ocho Rios, but less flights arrive here. Here are the drive times to each resort. I rounded up, just to keep things accurate. FYI, these times don’t include weather, traffic, and other crazy happenings on the road!

• Sandals Negril – From MBJ: About an hour and a half along the northwest coast.

Saint Lucia has two airports: UVF in the south (most travelers use this one) and SLU near Castries, which offers shorter transfers when flights are available.

How to Choose the Right Sandals Based on Transfer Time

If you prefer to be on the beach quickly after landing, Sandals Montego Bay, Royal Caribbean, Grenada, Royal Bahamian, Emerald Bay, Barbados, and Royal Barbados should be at the top of your list. These resorts offer 5–20 minute transfers, which means your vacation starts almost immediately. Whoop, whoop!

If you don’t mind a scenic drive and love the idea of settling into vacation mode while riding along the coast or through lush mountains, then Saint Lucia’s trio, South Coast, Royal Curaçao, Ochi, Royal Plantation, Dunn’s River, and Saint Vincent reward the longer travel time with more seclusion and bigger landscapes. And you get a lot of good information from your driver if you interact with them. They have the best information.

The right choice often comes down to your arrival time, your tolerance for winding island roads, and how quickly you want to be in the pool. Some of my clients want to be sipping a drink within 20 minutes of landing. Others think of the drive as part of the adventure. Both are valid, and both help narrow down the perfect Sandals resort. I like to be at the resort, but I don’t mind a nice drive to see the countryside, either.
